Desert de Les Palmes

From his top can contemplate the whole world of beauty and plasticity formed by the wide Page castellonense.

The Natural Place of the Desert de les Palmes is part of five municipal terms: Cabanes, Benicasim, Pobla Tornesa, Borriol and Castellón. It is nailed in a coastal mountainous range of the region of the High Page, parallel to the coast, with abundant combs and roquedos. The relief is abrupt and it reaches his maximum level in the peak of Bartolo with 729 m.

the desert denomination Attracts attention to these mountains when they present the most leafy vegetation of the whole environment. The term has a historical and not landscape origin, since in 1697 a community settled in these places of religious Carmelite, whose order names ‘deserts‘ to the places dedicated to the spiritual retirement far from the worldly noise. Since in the area the palm hearts abound especially, the whole place happened to be named ‘Desert de les Palmes’.

The presence of the Carmelite ones has left two of the most interesting buildings of the place: the ancient Monastery, and the new Monastery where the monks stay at present. Also the place is counted with a series of ruins and constructions of notable interest like the castles of Miravet and Montornés, the chapel of them by Santes, Castell Vell and the chapel of Magdalen.
